Sleep was my mistress; how I loved her embrace.
She held me all night, made me feel so grand.
But lately, she makes excuses, won’t come by my place—
Sleep was my mistress; how I loved her embrace.
Tonight she refuses to meet face-to-face;
at this point I’d settle for a one-night-stand.
Sleep was my mistress; how I loved her embrace.
She held me all night, made me feel so grand.
This triolet was written for dverse poets “Form for All“
I love this! I really like the emphasis you created by italicizing “was” the second you used the repeated line.
This is my favorite part:
“Tonight she refuses to meet face-to-face;
at this point I’d settle for a one-night-stand” … cracked me up!
I’m glad you joined in.
Glad I can still make you LOL from time-to-time *wink*
Fun to join in on this one…thanks for making me aware.
ugh….hate it when sleep is illusive like that…had one night earlier this week, she def was not coming around…smiles. nice triolet
Brian, I was under the impression you got no sleep ever! lol…you are definitely a man who milks productivity out of every minute it seems with all the writing and commenting you get done, plus family and work!
Thanks for coming by and commenting…you’re always a welcome voice here.
Very clever and soulful. I think anyone who suffers from insomnia can appreciate the thought here; and the poetry is wrought to the form which gives it a grace and music that actual insomnia is missing. Well done!
Thanks Gay! I had fun with the write, even if I was up all night *smile*
I thought you said you were going to be fine and be able to sleep. What happened?!
I was fine, just couldn’t sleep for a bit. Not sure why…perhaps the world just needed one more triolet?
I’m sure that’s it! I feel like I’m to blame when you can’t sleep. Maybe you need to resume your hot-tea drinking.
lol…perhaps I do…but “rest” assured, you were not at all to blame last night!
Excellent triolet! It’s been a long time since I had trouble with insomnia, but you’ve captured it so well here. Peace, Linda
Thanks again for your visit and comment…have really enjoyed reading your work as well…very inspirational!
Humour and pain here
very perceptive John…thanks for the visit and the comment!
So does this mean “sleep” is a metaphor for me? 😛 Or is it one of your other mistresses?
Well we had a face-to-face last night, so it’s certainly not you 🙂
The mistress truly is sleep, and she had me exceedingly frustrated last night by her absence!
We may need to change your layout; I can’t read half the comments!
ugh..it’s hard when sleep flees…esp. when you know that you have to get up early and should be fit then… but if sleeplessness produces such a nice poem..smiles..
Hard indeed Claudia! Shawna challenged me to be productive when I can’t sleep, so I used the prompt as an opportunity to at least produce something…I’m glad you think it was worthwhile! *smile*
Excellent, and can so relate. The mistress has indeed been fickle of late. A good read.
LOL…how fickle she can be! Fortunately, for most of my life, she’s been a delightful friend. Maybe she’ll warm to me again some day soon.
No kidding!!! You have NEVER had problems sleeping before. I’m the one who’s always had such a hard time sleeping … every night of my entire night. Conditions have to be absolutely perfect. 🙂 … Unless I take sleeping pills or NyQuil. Those are my best nights of sleep ever! My goodness, you have always just been completely zonked out until recently. Nothing could wake you or interrupt your love affair with that other woman.
A lover – what a wonderful metaphor for sleep. A definite thumbs-up for this!
Thanks! You provided a great prompt.
This is outstanding! Sorry about the insomnia . . .but look what it brought us! 🙂
Lol…thanks! Really enjoy your writing as well!
Very well done!
Saying a little prayer for you…sweet dreams!
Thanks Bee…prayers answered! I slept “like a baby” last night! 🙂
Oh man, like 3 nights in a row with deep and peaceful sleep…you must be a real prayer warrior Bee!
Great write! Very clever 🙂
Thanks again K.S….really appreciate your kind words and encouragement!
My husband could relate to this, he’s had trouble sleeping for years… 4 AM, 5 AM… then tired the next day… It’s not a fun thing.
Ugh…not fun at all ! I’ve had great sleep every night since writing this, however, and I feel like people have been praying. Very blessed!
Ohhh…how I know what you mean! lol This was great 🙂 I will be praying that you continue to sleep well!!!
Blessings
Thank you! Hope you have pleasant rest as well!
Hey, you used to write fantastic posts, but the last few posts have been kinda boring… I miss your great posts. Past several posts are just a bit out of track!
Hey Jae…thanks for your comments and thoughts. I have been responding to a lot of poetry “prompts” which is why the posts have been so different.
I definitely plan to write more of the same kind of posts that I started out with. Thanks again for your thoughts and letting me know you enjoyed the earlier writes!
I really adore this – partly for how simply and tastefully it’s written and partly because I can relate every night of my life from age 6 to it. I think the bible either outright says or implies that G-d has his hand even in our sleep, that He is in control of when we fall asleep and when we wake up (what an amazing late-to-work excuse that would make :P) so perhaps a purpose may be fulfilled in our sleeplessness. I shall keep your rest in my prayers (:
Thank you lux! really happy for your visit and comment…look forward to reading more of your work soon!
A witty love letter to something that too often plagues me.
